Sometimes it\u2019s difficult to ask for help even when we are at our most vulnerable.<\/p>\n
Last summer, I met an elderly man with a flat battery who had called for help at his home after no luck with another roadside assist service. He had called the shop, exasperated, asking for help with not only a flat battery and a flat tyre, but physically moving his Toyota Camry out from his garage – that\u2019s standard, so not a problem.<\/p>\n
As I approached the address, I entered a retirement community. That would explain that none of his neighbours were able to help him. When I met him at his house, I learned that he had just been discharged from hospital after a hip replacement.<\/p>\n
While I was replacing his tyre, I saw that the only people going past in the complex were other elderly people living in similar small units, and the occasional nurse. I asked him if he had any food if he\u2019d been away from the house for so long. He said he had just got home and hadn\u2019t even had the chance to get any shopping done – that\u2019s why it was so important!<\/p>\n
After the battery and tyre replacement, he was well and on his way for a much need grocery trip.<\/p>\n
As our loved ones grow older, it\u2019s easy to forget that many people aren\u2019t comfortable jump starting their car or replacing their tyre – or even physically capable of doing so. If you\u2019re broken down, it\u2019s helpful to know someone local to call. Roadside assist services can be time consuming due to long times on hold, waiting for response vehicles. Would you know who to call if you were in the Brisbane Area, broken down and stuck for time in sweltering heat – and you knew that help was four hours away?<\/p>\n
